SANDY (July 13, 2016) – The Salt Lake Board of Realtors® will hold its annual Christmas in July event at The Road Home Midvale Family Shelter on Friday, July 15 from 8:45 a.m. to noon at 529 West 9th Avenue (7300 South) in Midvale.
This year nearly 300 people (more than half children) will be given basic daily living necessities. Each individual will receive a backpack filled with games, toys, books, back-to-school items, blankets, clothing and personal hygiene items.
At 8:45 a.m., Santa and Mrs. Clause will make an appearance on a fire truck. In addition, games, crafts, and lunch will be provided.
“It is a privilege for Realtors® to partner with The Road Home by helping families during the summer months when donations are at a low point,” said Cheryl Acker, president of the Salt Lake Board of Realtors®. “The Road Home Midvale Family Shelter opened last year and already is operating near capacity.”
The Midvale shelter holds 300 beds and averages 236 people each night. The shelter opened in November 2015 and specifically provides emergency housing to families. As long as a family is actively working toward securing housing, they can stay at the shelter. Families at the shelter stay an average of 45 days.
More than 50 real estate professionals of the Salt Lake Board of Realtors® are donating their time for the Christmas in July event. In addition, Apollo Burgers will be serving lunch. Recreation Outlet donated the backpacks.
According to The Road Home, a family is much better suited to address whatever challenges it faces within the comfort, safety, and privacy of its own home. In addition, children are better served having a room of their own, in which to do their schoolwork; and there is a therapeutic element to housing that best serves everyone in the long run.
